Family-friendly Fun in SWFL

Dave’s daughter Jill here…the guest blogger!  You will hear from me on the blog from time to time with my two cents.  My husband and I and our three daughters moved down to Florida last year and we LOVE it here!  If you’re here on vacation or recently moved or are moving here, this post will give you a little insight on our top 5 favorite places in the area for the whole family to enjoy.

photoLakes Park – 7330 Gladiolus Drive, Fort Myers 33908 (website)

There is SO much to do at Lakes Park.  The short list includes ~3 miles of paved paths to walk, bike or run, a rock climbing wall, 2 playgrounds, 2 water feature playgrounds, restrooms, and the Community Gardens, a sensory experience of plants, trees, and shrubs. The Miniature Railroad and Train Village offers a 1.5 mile ride around a portion of the lake.  You can also rent a surrey, paddleboat or kayak and go on your own little exploration.  There are a number of shelters and barbequing areas, sand volleyball courts and open fields to run.  You could literally hang out there all day!

realtyproswfl_cmon_museumC’Mon-The Galisano Children’s Museum of Naples – 15080 Livingston Rd Naples 34109 (website)

This museum is awesome. Period.  Children of all ages can have loads of fun here.  From their website… “journey through the swamps of the Everglades, weave through a maze, climb a two-story banyan tree, or experiment with the water play station. Children can become a weather forecaster, a farmer, a chef, a fisherman, an artist, an architect or a veterinarian; explore the cold of an igloo, the whoosh of the wind, the sound of the sea, the effects of water and the colors of the rainbow.” Plus, they have an awesome little café that serves healthy snacks and meals right there on site.  Our girls have been to C’Mon a TON of times and have a blast every visit.

realtyproswfl_bowmans_beachBowman’s Beach – Bowman’s Beach Rd & Sanibel-Captiva Road (website)

It’s not just a beach, it’s a nature hike too!  The natural beach is the main feature but the trails and bridge over a fresh water stream are an added bonus.  Bowman’s has a park for the children to play, picnic spots, and showers and bathrooms too.  The beaches are beautiful and plentiful with many treasures from the Gulf.  Finally, the chances are slim that you won’t get a spot at Bowmans – the parking lot is massive and if you’re a local and having a parks & recreation parking pass, it’s free!  The parking lot can also accommodate RVs for daily parking as well.  Surfs up!

realtyproswfl_naples_zooNaples Zoo – 1590 Goodlette-Frank Rd, Naples 34102 (website)

Topical jungle comes to mind when I think about Naples Zoo.  Aside from the beautiful surroundings – there are many cool animals to visit like lions, kangaroos, monkeys, bears, giraffes and tropical birds. The monkeys are viewed best by taking a boat tour around the lake where they all live.  And, you can even hand feed the giraffes!  The zoo is the perfect size – small enough to offer an intimate stroll but large enough to accommodate all sorts of cool animals.

realtyproswfl_6mile_sloughSix Mile Cypress Slough Preserve – 7751 Penzance Blvd, Fort Myers 33966 (website)

Enjoy a peaceful walk on the 1.2 mile long boardwalk trail through beautiful SWFL nature preserve allowing you to see many different species of wildlife in the natural habitat that will also vary depending on the time of year and season.  There are a handful of observation decks which allow breathtaking views, including Otters Pond which we loved!  Between the educational displays and provided trail guide, the Explorers Companion (http://www.leeparks.org/pdf/Explorers-Companion.pdf), you are able to find and learn all there is to discover.  They also offer guided walks – the schedule is provided on their website.  You do not have to pay for admittance to the park; however, there is a parking fee of $1/hour or a maximum of $5.00 per stay.  Enjoy!

Southwest Florida: Prime real estate dating back to the 1500s

poncedeleonDo you remember learning about Ponce De Leon in your history class?  Well, he never discovered the “Fountain of Youth” that he heard about from the natives in what is now Puerto Rico, but he did discover Florida in the early 1500’s on a search for gold, jewels and the mythical fountain.  During that voyage he landed somewhere near Punta Rassa which is very close to where the bridge goes from the mainland out to Sanibel/Captiva Island.  When he landed he encountered the Calusa Indian Tribe.  This tribe had inhabited the area along the coast of SW Florida for several thousand years and their population had grown to an estimated 50,000.   The Calusa were tall and muscular and were described a fierce, war-like people. They got most of their food from fish and shellfish which they caught along the coast and waterways.  Their chief town is thought to be Mound Key in Estero Bay which is made almost entirely of shells and clay.  The Spanish thinking that the Calusa were a threat, attacked them and killed a large group of the tribe.  Still, Ponce was very interested in the area and returned to Spain where the King granted him control of the entire area of Florida.

calusaindiansIn 1521, Ponce de Leon put together a group of ships and returned to the area and landed somewhere along the coast of SW Florida with settlers to form a Colony.  The group was savagely attacked by the Calusa who did not forget about what happened 8 years earlier. A large number of Spanish were killed during this battle.  Ponce was seriously wounded by an Indian arrow and fled to Cuba hoping to recover.  Unfortunately he was unable to recover and died there in July of 1521.

After the death of Ponce de Leon, aside from a few missionaries that attempted to convert the Calusa, there was little colonization of the SW Florida area since no one wanted to confront the Calusa.   It wasn’t until the middle 1700’s, more than two centuries later, that other tribes began invading the Calusa and capturing them for slavery in the north.  During this time many of the villages were totally wiped out by small pox and measles that were brought in by the Europeans for which the Calusa had no immunity.   By 1800 this once great tribe was reduced to very few many of whom migrated to Cuba.

During the late 1700s the coastal areas of Lee County became a base of operation for pirates that regularly raided cargo ships that were traveling to New Orleans. Then in 1821, Florida became a U.S. Territory.  As late as the 1820’s SW Florida was a wilderness inhabited by other Indian tribes, pirates and runaway slaves from the Southeast US.

I hope you enjoyed your lesson; I’ll always be a teacher at heart.  I love to teach as much as I enjoy selling real estate!

Welcome to Southwest Florida Living

Allow me to introduce myself.  I’m Dave Gilchrist – a full time resident in the SW Florida area for 13 years. I am originally from Northern Illinois where I grew up on farm.  Click here to learn a little more about me.  For the past 11 years, I have enjoyed being a realtor representing buyers and sellers of property throughout the region. I have been involved with Real Estate Investments for many years including rental property, home building, property management, 1031 exchanges, and real estate IRAs.  On a personal note, I enjoy traveling, golf, relaxing on the beach, restaurants, and keeping track of my 4 children and 7 grandchildren.  Life is good!

Blind_Pass_sunset_Dave Gilchrist_SWFL RealtorIn this blog, my goal is to cover a variety of topics about Southwest Florida to inform people about the area and give them an insight as to what there is to do here and also what it is like to live in this beautiful, sub-tropical area.  I’ll write about the history of the various regions i.e., Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Sanibel/Captiva, etc.; and will also cover topics such as:  beaches, golf, fishing, restaurants, parks and recreation, cycling, industries and the ecology and geology of the area.  I could go on and on about this wonderful region.

The Lee / Collier County area is one of the best up and coming areas in the Country.  It recently became the home of Hertz Corporation corporate office and it’s 700+ executive employees.  The modern international airport, the tropical climate, and Florida Gulf Coast University are just a few things that make this area a prime location for high tech industries.

Please take a few miutes to peruse my website.  Aside from reading my blog, you can link to the Sanibel MLS or the Ft Myers MLS and review my listings.  I am always available to answer your questions, so always feel free to contact me!  This site will easily show you why I (and many, many others) love to call this beautiful region home for all or part of the year.  Until next time…cheers!
